A Whiter Shade on Gold Quilted 23, 24 from Virtual Quilter

I love leaving spaces in my designs which can be filled with quilting motifs. I also would outline the applique pieces in these designs.

The spaces left between the motifs and the applique in these designs could be filled with a background filler in a thread matching the background, leaving the motifs to stand out.

The hardest part of making a quilt with applique designs ‘whited out’ would be choosing the background colour, then finding a collection of fabrics for the very low contrast in the appliques.

My favourite of these two is the second!

A Whiter Shade on Gold Quilted 13, 14 from Virtual Quilter

When I designed the blocks I have used in this series I spent a lot of time trying to get the right amount of contrast between the applique pieces … then discovered that little or no contrast between the applique shapes would work just as well, providing they contrasted with the background.

Love the second one today, but in the real quilt I would fill in those blank spaces with quilted filler patterns in matching thread.
